What is Psoriasis?
Do you know what is Psoriasis? Psoriasis Definition: It is a skin disease occurs due to the multiplication of cells more than the normal volume. The word Psoriasis is derived from the Greek word which means ‘being itchy.’ It is a long-lasting autoimmune system disorder results in patches on the skin in different colors. Generally, our body develops new skin in place of the dead cells. This takes some time of about 3 to 4 weeks. But in psoriasis condition, the new skin forms within 1 week. The excessive occurrence of the new skin makes the dead cells accumulate on the skin’s surface. It results in itchy skin and rashes of different colors. The Psoriasis can occur anywhere in the body. We can see this infection mostly in some places like Elbow, Nails, Knees, Scalp, feet, etc.
The severity of the Psoriasis may vary. Some persons have only mild rashes, and others will have rashes throughout the body. Studies have shown that people with Psoriasis will also lead to Psoriatic Arthritis. You can see this condition in between 6 to 42 % of the people with Psoriasis disease. This disease occurs in the persons having tissue type HLA-B27. The Psoriatic Arthritics victims will encounter severe pain, swelling of both feet and ankles. Also, the nails will get damage. Types of Psoriasis
Psoriasis shows its impact on men and women equally. Psoriasis is characterized into five types. Though five Psoriasis types exist, people will come into contact with only one at a time. What is Plaque Psoriasis? Plaque Psoriasis, also known as Psoriasis Vulgaris. It is the most common type which looks like plaques on the skin’s surface. It means the red raised skin with silvery-white patches. The Plaque Psoriasis occurs anywhere on the body. But the most familiar places include Elbow, Knees, Trunk, Nails and Scalp. You can identify the Plaque Psoriasis by some symptoms which include Pain, Itching, and crack. This Psoriasis skin disorder affects 85 % to 95% of persons having Psoriasis. This Plaque Psoriasis looks like sore and makes itchy. The patches may worse if you scratch them. The rash that appears can be 4 inches wide or greater than that. You can get this disease at any age but prevalent in adults. You need not worry because there are many medications to cure this skin disease.
The second type of the Psoriasis is Guttate. The Psoriasis Guttate is mostly seen in childhood or adult persons. The word Guttate is taken from the Latin word Gutt which means drop. Since, this type of Psoriasis occurs like the pink-red spots or drops on the skin, named as the Guttate Psoriasis. These dots or scales are not as thick as the scales of Plaque Psoriasis. You can notice this skin disease on the limbs, torso, trunk, and scalp. Mainly this type of disease occurs due to Strep throat, cold, flu, and other upper respiratory infections. Usually, this Guttate Psoriasis causes after two to three weeks of the strep throat.
The other names of the Inverse Psoriasis are Intertriginous psoriasis and Flexural Psoriasis. Inverse Psoriasis is the patches that look like bright red, shiny and sore. Normally, this disease occurs in the skin folds. The surrounding area is smooth and has no patches. This disease is caused due to skin to skin contact. The most common places where you can get Inverse Psoriasis are under the breasts, behind the knees, armpits, buttocks, groin. Sweating and rubbing makes the Inverse Psoriasis irritating and worse. It is bothersome for the overweight persons due to large skin folds. Also, occurs due to rubbing of the thighs. In addition to the Inverse Psoriasis, you can get other types.
What is Psoriasis Pustules? Pustules Psoriasis is mostly seen in adults. It looks like white pus filled bumps surrounds by the red skin. Usually, this type of disease triggers due to stress, contact with certain chemicals, pregnancy, getting over UV light, etc. The pus in the blisters or bumps seems to be contagious but not it to be. Sometimes it appears on hands and feet and others at anywhere in the body. Von Zumbusch, palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP), and acropustulosis are the three types of the Inverse Psoriasis. Each type of the Inverse Psoriasis consists of different symptoms based on the severity.
Erythrodermic Psoriasis rarely occurs which looks like red sheets instead of scales. It affects the large surface area of the body at a time. The affected persons may get exfoliation, severe itching, shedding of the skin, and pain. If we are untreated the Plaque Psoriasis, this erythrodermic psoriasis occurs. Due to imbalances in the body and excessive fluid loss during this Psoriasis leads to fatal illness like heart disease, Pneumonia. Also, the temperature of the body varies and unstable which causes shivering. The main causes of Erythrodermic Psoriasis are alcohol, sunburn, infections, etc.
What is Psoriasis Scalp? As the name itself Scalp which means Psoriasis disease on the scalp. It is the skin disorder which appears as the reddish scaly patches. The patches seem to be like crusty or flaky or dandruff. Either you can get it as the single patch or throughout the scalp. Sometimes the Psoriasis Scalp may spread towards to the forehead, under the neck and across the ears. It can cause severe itching and pain. Scratching of the patches makes the Scalp Psoriasis worse and leads to hair fall. Psoriasis on Scalp can be mild in some cases and severe in other situations leads to crusted sores which last for a long time.
Though it is not present in the official Psoriasis Types, which affects half of the people with Psoriasis. The Psoriatic nails look like white or yellow margin at the top. In fact, the nails are split & crack, sometimes even fall off. Often has the small pits and tiny dents on the nail plate. This condition is known as onycholysis. You can confuse with the Nail Psoriasis either it is fungal infections or other. Many medicines are available to treat and lower the symptoms of the Nail Psoriasis.
Other Sub-Types of Psoriasis
The people affected with the Psoriasis has the patches and scales in other places besides the main places. It means Psoriasis may affect the feet, genital area, hands, face, liver, etc. Based on the places that get affected there is a separate treatment of the Psoriasis. Also, the symptoms of the Psoriasis may vary.
Psoriasis on Hands, Legs & Feet
What is Psoriasis? Psoriasis on the hands and feet may also lead to the patches on the palm and soles. This condition is often called as the Palmar-plantar Psoriasis. Also, you can see this Psoriasis on the feet, nails, Knuckles, and back of your hands. This Psoriasis on hands, feet makes your skin pain, reddish, crack or split. Also, seems to be pustules, thick scales and swelling. Due to this disease, you can’t do your work.
Genital psoriasis occurs at the genital area of the body. It looks like the bright red and shiny patches. Usually, the Genital Psoriasis occurs in the places of vulva or penis, skin folds, and buttocks. It is a long lasting Psoriasis Skin condition that affects 2% of the people. Both children and adults will get this Psoriasis rash. The other names of the Genital Psoriasis are Penile Psoriasis and Penis Psoriasis.
